Unit of Inquiry

How we Share the Planet

Central Idea:

-Farms are providers of many of our daily nutritional needs.

Lines of Inquiry:

-The steps involved in getting food to our tables

-The edible parts of plants

-The variety of farms throughout the world and their products

Key Concepts:

- Connection

- Function

Summative Task:

- Sequencing: Students will retell the story of "The Little Red Hen" to show the order of how wheat seeds get to bread

- Farm Fun Day: Students will dress in a simple farmer costume and bring in a fruit or vegetable of their choice (actual, toy, or picture)

- Students need to know the origin of the food they bring and complete a show and share

ACTION

Action is a very significant aspect of the IB learning process. In the PYP Program, students will engage in 6 Unit of Inquiries (UOI) throughout the school year, with each unit being approximately 6 weeks long. During each UOI, 3 students from the class will be assigned as the “Action Stars”, which means that they are encouraged to use what has been learned and apply it to the “real world.” The purpose of this initiative is to help further knowledge about what has been learned within the classroom. Example: If we are learning about recycling, students might go home and tell you that they want to implement a recycling program with you at home, or they may do something simple like telling you that something you were throwing in the garbage may be recycled. Students who are not assigned this role for the current UOI being taught are still encouraged to show ACTION! Action comes in many forms; it might be something small to something very large, but as long as the children understand the concepts, action is important no matter the size! Please check out our Action board in our classroom to see all our fabulous learners.
